Another month on Substack, and another deep dive into the stories I’ve been writing.

In this issue, I’ll be sharing four drabbles and the sparks of inspiration behind them:

  • Level One

  • Once, in Istanbul

  • Skybound

  • The Dragon and the Deep

  • The Captain and the Dragon

If you have any feedback on my stories or inspirations, I’d love to hear it—please leave a comment below.

Level One

The Story

He awoke in his bed, knowing nothing about the world around him.

He walked through what looked like a medieval village and listened to townspeople talking. He ventured out of town into the woods beyond.

All of a sudden, he stumbled upon an ogre wielding a large club. He now realised he should have spent time buying weapons and armour in the village.

He flailed his arms ineffectually at the ogre as it swung its club. Everything went black.

He respawned in bed.

He was ready to tackle the level again — but this time, he would explore the village first.

The Prompt

Write a story about the first five minutes of your character’s life.

The Inspiration

This was the very first story I wrote for my month-long challenge of writing a 100-word drabble every day.
