Stray Hearts
In a city full of strangers, to one, you are the world.

I’ve recently started publishing flash fiction on Medium, inspired by monthly prompts from the publication Story Lamp Reviews.
This story was written in response to the prompt:
Someone who disappears and nobody seems to notice — except one person.
I’d love to hear what you think.
Life was tough for a stray cat in the city, but Fluffy managed. All the humans ignored him, except Jim.
Jim sat on a street corner, in a frayed suit and worn shoes, head held high. Fluffy often curl up on his lap, purring, sharing his warmth. If Jim had a good day, they would even share a tin of tuna.
Then one day, Jim didn’t come. Strays moved on sometimes, even the human ones. But as the days passed, Fluffy began to worry. He searched the crowds. Many had seen Jim daily, and some even gave him coins. None of them seemed to notice his absence.
Fluffy hoped Jim had found a home and a job. But deep down, he knew Jim would have come back for him, even if it was only for a goodbye scratch behind the ears. But still, Fluffy waited, just in case.
