The Halloween Cat
This is my final Halloween-inspired piece. Halloween isn’t complete without a black cat!
They found him abandoned in a ditch and brought him home.
He’d never been inside before. He thought the pumpkins, candles and cobwebs were there just for him.
They named him Salem, what else do you call a black cat found on Halloween? He was cheeky and playful, loved belly rubs and naps by the fire.
But Halloween was his time. His favourite toys came back out. The family called them ‘decorations’ and ‘don’t touch,’ which only made them more fun.
He loved the kids who came trick-or-treating. He’d crouch in the shadows by the door, eyes half-closed, black fur blending into the night.
When they least expected it, he’d pounce and yowl, sending them laughing and screaming down the street.
Each year they tried to spot him first but never did.
Because he was Salem, the Halloween cat, and this was his time to shine.

I love the prompts provided by Story Lamp Reviews, they turn into some of my favourite stories. Here is another cat-related story inspired by their prompts.
As well as flash fiction, I have also published two children’s picture books based on my son — Jack’s Noisy Day and Jack’s Train Day. Please check them out on Amazon.

Cats are fantastic!
