A small moment at a barbecue

Trudy always felt tense at barbeques. She put her salad with the rest of the sides.
‘Grub’s up everyone!’ called Toby.
Trudy tried to stay inconspicuous. But a stranger had taken charge of the sausages.
‘Here, have one,’ he said, shoving a sausage under her nose.
‘No thanks,’ she replied. ‘I’m vegetarian.’
The guy looked at her like she had two heads. ‘Why come to a barbeque if you don’t eat meat?’
‘Maybe to see my friends, who don’t care what I eat?’ she replied snarkily. She turned away, sharing a knowing glance with her friends. There was always one.
